Transponder Key Programming

If your car was manufactured after 1995, there is a strong chance it uses a transponder chip key. Inside the plastic head of your key is a tiny electronic chip that sends a unique signal to your vehicle's immobilizer system every time you insert the key and turn the ignition. If the signal matches what the car expects, the engine starts. If it does not match — or if the chip is missing, damaged, or not programmed — the engine will crank but refuse to start. This anti-theft technology has dramatically reduced car theft, but it also means that getting a new key requires professional programming, not just cutting a metal blade.
