The Mercedes-Benz Electronic Steering Lock (ELV) is an anti-theft device integrated into the steering column. It physically locks the steering wheel when the ignition is off and unlocks it when the vehicle's keyless-go system authenticates the smart key. Unfortunately, the ELV motor and internal gears are a well-documented weak point — especially on models manufactured between 2007 and 2014. The plastic gear teeth wear down over time, causing the lock to jam in either the locked or unlocked position.
